Tesla Virtual Dealership
The concept for this building is to create a multi-purpose space that will bridge the gap between designing and selling. The Charleston based project will use the technology of TESLA to promote the sustainable practices already existent in the area while providing both creative and residential areas for designers to explore and sell their craft. It will redefine the experience of buying automobiles.
Design ChallengeThe major challenges that were taken on during the design of this building center around the space constraints as well as building codes and accessibility. The design was created keeping all of these factors in mind, and was done in such a way to make it safe and accessible to the public, including those who may have ADA or other disabilities. The most important challenge which was undertaken during this process was integrating the technology of TESLA into the architecture completely. Not only is the space a showcase of TESLA’S automobiles, but it also features many other TESLA technology, including solar panels and exposed duct work. These aspects make the space even more inviting to the community as it showcases those ideals which it appreciates most.
Physical ContextPhysical traits of the building center are centered around an abstraction of the TESLA T.
This shape allows for better air circulation as well as creating space for sunlight to enter the building. The T shape has also created a space for a terrace which will be integrated into the daily lives of those artists, designers, and consumers who populate the space. A kinetic skin, articulated from the design of the TESLA Automobile Hood, allows panels on the outside of the building to move according to the position of the sun. Allowing sunlight to enter the building in appropriate intervals as well as allowing the maximum amount of solar power to be gleaned for the panels at use in the building. Finally the building integrates the physical urban fabric around it into the architecture, by drawing energy from the environment around it to create a space for clean living.
