Circo Loco
Year: 2024 Design & Honor Awards | Category: Student Project
Circo Loco, a city of perpetual wonder, juxtaposes the ethereal realms of a whimsical circus and an ever-evolving student hostel. Cemented landscapes host a rooftop skate park, an outdoor amphitheater adorned with trapezes, supported by the adjacent spinning Ferris wheel. Meanwhile, a porous timber structure stands as a testament to impermanence, embracing cyclical transformations with each passing academic cycle. Nestled amidst downtown Atlanta’s vibrant energy, Circo Loco awaits, a beacon of magic opposite the Centennial Olympic Park.
Design Challenge
Circo Loco’s design challenge lies in harmonizing the contrasting elements of permanence and impermanence within a cohesive architectural expression. Balancing the fantastical allure of the circus with the functional requirements of a student hostel demands innovative spatial arrangements and structural solutions. Inspired by one of the stories in the Invisible Cities book, the project must seamlessly integrate elements of wonder with practicality. Moreover, the design must navigate the dynamic urban context of downtown Atlanta, engaging with adjacent landmarks while maintaining its own distinct identity.
