AIA Georgia stands in full support of AIA National’s opposition to the Department of Education’s proposed exclusion of architecture from the federal “professional degree” definition for student loan purposes. This federal definition determines which graduate programs qualify for higher federal loan limits, directly impacting access to education for future architects.Architecture is a uniquely professional field, requiring advanced education, rigorous internships, state licensure, and professional insurance. Architects are entrusted with the art and science of designing and constructing buildings and spaces that serve human needs, ensure safety, and enhance the built environment. Our work propels the economy, safeguards communities, and improves the human condition. The proposed policy risks limiting access to graduate education for future architects, threatening the pipeline of talent essential to our firms and communities. While licensure requirements remain unchanged, reduced federal loan caps could force students to seek costly private financing, delay their studies, or even drop out of the profession impacting recruitment and retention across the profession.AIA Georgia is actively monitoring this issue, working with AIA National and partner organizations to advocate for the recognition of architecture as a professional degree. We encourage all members and supporters to share this information widely and join us in advocating for our profession. We call on our legislators to support maintaining architecture’s recognition as a professional degree. Together, we can ensure that architecture receives the recognition and support it deserves.
